As many of you know I have been trading the MAX Trading System for the past year. I have today decided to stop any further effort in that endeavor. I have poured my heart and soul into learning the MAX Trading System, and for me unfortunately, it has been another long hard trip to nowhere. I must now turn back, gather my spirits and push forward. This experience has been bitterly disappointing, the MAX system had so much promise, but I know deep down I must abandon it, despite me taking time away from my family, despite me refusing nights out with friends, despite hundreds of hours of work late into the night. It was not an easy decision to make, but I did not want to fall into the cognitive bias trap of theĀ sunk cost fallacy.
I am coming full circle to where I started over a year ago with naked charts, i.e. no indicators at all. Not even a moving average. I am studying in earnest the James16 methods and derivatives of it. Actually James16 did not invent these techniques, they have been used in the markets for a long time and were popularised by Martin Pring. James16 seems to have popularised it further with his famous thread on forex factory and I have joined his group to learn about this in more detail.
I am employing a one-one trading mentor who I have great respect for. He has been trading many years and the first half of his trading career has been the same as mine up to this point, a bitter disappointment. He did though, with tenacity turn his trading around and studied James16 and has also been a professional trader at a prop trading firm. He now trades his own account and I want to learn from his mistakes and try and minimise the amount of grief in learning how to trade in the future. I firmly believe I am on the right track now (gosh how many times have I said that?) and I am glad I have shed the indicators from my charts.
I will be posting my progress up here for all to see.
I am making this decision for my own personal reasons. Many of you may find that the MAX Trading System is suited to you and works for you. I know of several people that are trading the MAX profitably, I have certainly learnt a lot from it and the most valuable was probably the money management and scaling-in techniques. I may use those in the future in my naked trading. They are tools that are there in my trading toolbox should I need them. I think that every trader needs to find a system and timeframe that is suited to them, otherwise it’s just not going to work. I’ve discovered that the MAX was not suited to me.

It differs greatly from the scrolling backtesting I did, and I think this is because the market was not live. I have again learnt another valuable (although painful) lesson – trade the system you want to use LIVE before using real money, and don’t spend months backtesting it before you trade it live in a demo account. DO THEM IN PARALLEL!
I want to thank the MAX community and have made some nice friends there, but I must move on and find my own way with a method of trading that works for me.
